Thank you
for visiting our website and welcome to Sam Houston
State University. Our goal is to give fans a taste of
the excitement that continues to build in Huntsville and
across east Texas for Bearkat basketball.
The University is named for Sam Houston, the only man to
serve as governor of two states (Texas and Tennessee),
the hero of the battle of San Jacinto, and the first
President of the Republic of Texas. Sam Houston State is
the third oldest public institution of higher learning
in Texas and it celebrated its 125th birthday in 2004.
Sam Houston State is located in Huntsville, Texas, just
an hour north of Houston and two and a half hours south
of Dallas on Interstate 45. The 2005 fall enrollment
continued to increase for the seventh year in a row and
is the largest in school history at 15,322. Five
colleges make up the university - Arts and Sciences,
Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Education and
Humanities and Social Science. The most famous alumnus
is Dan Rather of CBS News.
During the past seven seasons, the Bearkats have won
more games than any other team in the Southland
Conference. Sam Houston won the SLC Championship in 2000
and 2003. In 2003 SHSU also won its first-ever SLC
tournament, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the
first time in school history. This year we hope to
continue the success we have experienced since the
1998-99 season.
We appreciate your interest and hope you enjoy the site.
Sincerely,
Bobby Marlin
Head Basketball Coach
